The crop is not
suitable for South African weather conditions because of its reliance on heavy irrigation; and under drought
conditions, South Africa produces 765 560 tons of Soy annually and imports an additional 560 650 tons
in the same period. Black Soldier Fly Larvae is a highly efficient sustainable substitute to maintain a
consistent supply of animal protein independent of drought and weather conditions; at a fraction of the
land and water usage.
Black soldier fly larvae nutritionally have similar qualities to Soy and can replace Soy and Fishmeal 1:1. The
species was selected for breeding due to its high crude protein (35%-50% depending on feed content) and crude fat
content (15-23% depending on the feed content), the larvae also boast a rich amino acid and nutrient content, that
also lower the need for other supplements like lysine, alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, isoleucine, leucine.
Black Soldier Fly Larvae help to provide fish, poultry, ruminants and horses with a more well rounded, nutritionally
complex feed that show similar results as soy in meat production and increases egg laying rates in poultry production.
The production of BSF would not only contribute to hitting waste diversion targets but also would begin to localise
animal protein production.
